5.5 Iterating over Bits

In the previous sections we discussed how to construct bit sets and how to use bit operations to modify all set elements at once. But there are also situations where we need to process the elements of a set individually, for example if we want to print them or convert them to another data structure. The easiest way to iterate over the elements of a bit set is to iterate over all 64 bits and perform a certain action for those bits that are set to 1. For example, we can convert a bit set bits to a list of integers as follows:

var elements = new ArrayList<Integer>();
long mask = 1L;
for (int i = 0; i < 64; i++) {
    if ((bits & mask) != 0)
        elements.add(i);
    mask <<= 1;
}

Obviously, this solution requires exactly 64 iterations, regardless of the contents of bits.

We can speed up this loop by skipping over long runs of 0-bits. To do this, we use the numberOfTrailingZeros() function defined in class Long, which computes the number of trailing zeros in an integer. The updated loop looks as follows:

while (bits != 0) {
    int i = Long.numberOfTrailingZeros(bits);
    elements.add(i);
    bits &= ~(1L << i);
}

JDK: ArrayList, Long

In each iteration, the loop finds the rightmost 1-bit in bits, adds its position to elements, and then removes this bit from bits. The loop terminates as soon as all 1-bits have been processed, and the number of iterations is now equal to the total number of 1-bits. We can make one final improvement to this loop by employing a clever programming trick: If \(n\) is any number in two’s-complement representation, the expression \(n \AND (n-1)\) clears the least significant 1-bit of \(n\), so we can replace the final line inside the loop to obtain the following implementation:

while (bits != 0) {
    int i = Long.numberOfTrailingZeros(bits);
    elements.add(i);
    bits &= bits - 1; // clear least significant bit
}

JDK: ArrayList, Long

To understand how this trick works, we first note that subtracting 1 from any binary number toggles the least significant 1-bit and all the bits below it. To see this, consider the following two examples:

\begin{equation*} \begin{array}{lcc} & n=47 & n=44 \\ n & 101111_2 & 101100_2 \\ n-1 & 101110_2 & 101011_2 \\ n \AND (n-1) & 101110_2 & 101000_2 \end {array} \end{equation*}

If \(n\) is an odd number, subtracting 1 simply changes the least significant bit from 1 to 0; in this example, \(47=101111_2\) becomes \(46=101110_2\). If \(n\) is an even number, subtracting 1 changes all trailing 0-bits to 1 and the least significant 1-bit to 0; here, \(44=101100_2\) becomes \(43=101011_2\). In both cases the remaining bits are left unchanged, so the final step \(n\AND (n-1)\) has the net effect of clearing the least significant 1-bit of \(n\). We will see in Exercise 5.12 that the trick also works if \(n\) is negative or 0; the expression \(n\AND (n-1)\) therefore clears the lowest 1-bit for all integers in two’s-complement representation.

Bit Iterators

To make it even easier to iterate over the bits of an integer, we can encapsulate the explicit loops discussed in the previous section in a data type known as an iterator. Iterators retrieve successive elements of a data structure by providing two operations: one to retrieve the current element and one to advance to the next element. Iterators are commonly used with complex data structures such as linked lists or hash tables, but they are easily adapted to our use case.

In Java, The standard interface for iterators Iterator is parametrized by the type of the elements stored in the data structure.1 When iterating over bit patterns, the elements produced by the iterator are the positions of the 1-bits, so the element type is Integer. A complete implementation of this interface for iterating over the bits of a long is shown in Listing 5.8.

Listing 5.8ch5 / BitIterator

public class BitIterator implements Iterator<Integer> {
    private long remaining;

    public BitIterator(long bits) {remaining = bits;}

    @Override
    public boolean hasNext() {
        return remaining != 0;
    }

    @Override
    public Integer next() {
        int i = Long.numberOfTrailingZeros(remaining);
        remaining &= remaining - 1; // clear least significant bit
        return i;
    }
}

The hasNext() and next() methods are specified by the Iterator interface. The hasNext() method determines whether there are any additional elements in the sequence; this is the case if there are additional nonzero bits in remaining. The next() method fetches the next element in the sequence and advances the iterator. In our case, we find the next element in remaining by counting the trailing zeros and then advance the iterator by clearing the least significant bit.

We can now write a loop that iterates over bits by creating an instance of BitIterator and then calling next() repeatedly until hasNext() returns false:

var iter = new BitIterator(bits);
while (iter.hasNext()) {
    elements.add(iter.next());
}

As a final improvement, we can define a helper method iterate() that lets us use regular for loops to iterate over bits:

for (int i : Bits.iterate(bits)) {
    elements.add(i);
}

The iterate() method takes an integer and returns an object of type Iterable, which is then used by Java to create code equivalent to the while loop shown above. The implementation of iterate() is shown in Listing 5.9; the following remark explain the technical details of this short method.

Listing 5.9ch5 / Bits

// Iterate over the 1-bits of value.
public static Iterable<Integer> iterate(long value) {
    return () -> new BitIterator(value);
}

// Return the positions of all 1-bits.
public static List<Integer> toList(long bits) {
    var result = new ArrayList<Integer>();
    for (int i : iterate(bits))
        result.add(i);
    return result;
}

The expression

() -> new BitIterator(value);

in the implementation of Bits.iterate() is a so-called lambda expression or anonymous function, which creates a simple function whose body consists of the code after the arrow “->”. In Java, lambda expressions can be used to implement interfaces that consist of single method. This particular lambda expression is equivalent to creating a new instance of Iterable as follows:

new Iterable<Integer>() {
    public Iterator<Integer> iterator() {
        return new BitIterator(value);
    }
};

A review of lambda expressions and related programming techniques can be found in Appendix B.6.

Exercises

Exercise 5.12. We discussed in the text why the expression \(n \AND (n - 1)\) clears the least significant bit of every positive integer \(n\). Explain why this trick also works for negative integers and the number zero in two’s-complement representation.

Exercise 5.13.Use the expression \(n \AND (n-1)\) to count the number of 1-bits in an integer. (This quantity is called the population count or the bit count; see also Exercise 5.17).

Exercise 5.14. Explain how to use bit operations to test whether a number \(n\) is a power of 2, that is, whether it is of the form \(2^{k}\) for some value \(k\).
